Testing and Balancing your Pool

Balancing your pool water is one of the key parts of maintaining a clean, comfortable, well functioning pool. Weather and bather load can have a signicant impact on your balance from day to day, so it is important to test and balance your water often.

Chlorine is your sanitizer, and maintaining a good level is necessary for making sure your water is safe and inviting for your family. You will want to monitor the chlorine level at least 2 times per week as it can change quickly with weather conditions and use. Chlorine levels should be between 1ppm to 3ppm. Any lower and you risk exposure to bacteria and can experience swampy water. High chlorine, however, will lead to itchy eyes and skin.

Alkalinity is another very important component to your water balance. Alkalinity should be tested and adjusted weekly. Alkalinity is important because it helps to stabilize your pH, which means less work and less chemicals for you! A good alkalinity level will be between 100 and 150. Low alkalinity can lead to eye and skin irritation and cause damage to your equipment and surfaces.

Another important piece of the water chemistry puzzle is your pH, which measures the acidity of your water, and your level should stay at 7.2-7.6. Out of range pH can cause skin and eye irritation, cloudy water, and if left unchecked it can cause equipment damage. You will want to check and balance your pH at least once a week. The more balanced your pH, the more effective your sanitizer and other chemicals will be.

Some other things you will want to keep an eye on are calcium hardness, metals, and TDS. These should all be monitored on a monthly basis to protect your equipment and surfaces, and to keep your chemicals working at their highest efficiency.

I hope this has given you a better understanding of the importance of testing and balancing your water chemistry on a regular basis. Staying on top of the chemicals is the easiest way to avoid water problems, and make sure your family never misses a moment in your pool.

Happy swimming!
